Tips and Tricks

.

Creating a delicious Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry can be a delightful culinary adventure. To ensure your dish is a success, here are some helpful tips and tricks to consider:

  1. Start by using fresh ingredients. Opt for large, juicy shrimp and crisp vegetables to enhance the flavors and textures of your stir-fry. When preparing the shrimp, make sure to devein them properly for a cleaner taste.
  2. Don’t skimp on the garlic! Garlic is the star of this dish, so feel free to add extra cloves for a robust flavor profile. For an added kick, consider incorporating other seasonings like ginger, soy sauce, or chili flakes to elevate the taste.
  3. Timing is key when stir-frying. Ensure our pan or wok is hot before adding the ingredients, and cook them quickly over high heat to retain their crunchiness and nutrients. Remember to stir constantly to prevent burning and achieve an evenly cooked dish.

How To Make It

.

Time needed: 30 minutes

STEP-BY-STEP

  1. MARINATE THE SHRIMP

In a large bowl, combine shrimp, and garlic powder, then season them with salt and pepper. Toss to coat the shrimp evenly. Marinate for 10 minutes.

  2. COOK THE SHRIMP

Heat a wok or a wide pan with oil over medium heat. Cook the shrimp quickly, it should only take 20-30 seconds per side. Remove from the heat and set them aside while making the sauce.

  3. MAKE THE SAUCE

In a measuring cup or a small bowl, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, oyster sauce, honey, tomato paste, brown sugar, cornstarch, and red chili pepper flakes. Stir until the sugar and cornstarch dissolve.

  4. STIR FRY

Heat a clean wok with oil, add garlic and ginger, and saute until aromatic (careful not to burn the garlic). Add onion, bell pepper, and broccoli, then stir to combine. Cook the vegetables until crisp-tender. Add the sauce, and constantly stir until the sauce thickens. Add the shrimp, and stir to make sure it’s coated well with the sauce. Garnish with green onions and sesame oil.

WHAT TO SERVE IT WITH

One popular option is to serve your Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry with steamed white or brown rice. You can also consider pairing it with some noodles, such as soba noodles or rice noodles, for a more filling meal. For a healthier option, you can serve it with a side of mixed greens or a fresh salad tossed with a light vinaigrette dressing. Steam veggies are another great side dish option.

HOW TO STORE LEFTOVER

Cool and transfer the stir fry to an airtight container or a resealable bag. Make sure to remove as much air as possible to prevent oxidation and freezer burn. Refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. If you want to store them for a long period, place the container in the freezer, where it can last for up to 2-3 months. When ready to eat, thaw the frozen stir fry in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat in a pan on the stovetop or in the microwave until it’s heated through.

HOW TO PREVENT THE SHRIMP FROM BECOMING RUBBERY

Avoid overcooking them. Shrimp cook quickly and should be cooked just until they turn pink and opaque. Overcooked shrimp can become tough and chewy.

HOW DO I DEVINE SHRIMP

Make a shallow cut along the back of each shrimp with a knife. Use the tip of the knife to lift out the dark vein running along the back. Rinse the shrimp under cold water to clean out any remaining bits.

Notes

I added the garlic and ginger in a hot wok before sauteing the onion, this process releases the flavor of the garlic and infuses the oil with a more garlicky flavor. Keep an eye when sauteing to make the garlic don’t burn.
