Ingredients

  • Cabbage: You can either buy regular green cabbage or savoy cabbage. Savoy cabbage tends to come out a bit tender and easier to roll. In this recipe, I used green cabbage.
  • Ground beef: I used lean ground beef. If you like to make it vegetarian, just use a different kind of veggies and cooked rice or barley.
  • Cooke rice: White rice or barley
  • Onion: Yellow onion, chopped
  • Garlic cloves: Mince the garlic
  • Egg: Use one egg, this will bind the mixture
  • Tomato paste: It will help thicken the sauce as well as give the dish flavor
  • Paprika: You can use sweet or smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Tomato sauce: Is the typical sauce for Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
  • Water: This will keep the cabbage moist and prevent it from burning

HOW DO I PREVENT THE CABBAGE FROM FALLING OUT OF THE CABBAGE ROLLS?

To prevent the filling from falling out of the cabbage rolls, make sure you blanch the cabbage leaves first to make them more pliable. Then, fold the sides of the cabbage leaves inwards before rolling them up to keep the filling secure. You can also use toothpicks to hold the rolls together while they cook.

CAN I MAKE THE CABBAGE ROLLS AHEAD OF TIME AND REHEAT THEM LATER?

Yes, you can make cabbage rolls ahead of time and reheat them later. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat them in the oven at 350ºF until they are heated through, which typically takes 20-30 minutes.

WHAT KIND OF SAUCE SHOULD I USE TO COOK THE CABBAGE ROLLS?

Tomato-based sauces are commonly used to cook stuffed cabbage rolls. You can try using tomato sauce, marinara sauce, or canned diced tomatoes with some seasoning. Other options include cream-based sauces, such as sour cream or mushroom sauce. Ultimately, the choice of sauce will depend on your personal preference.
