Hot Chocolate

Let’s bring the Spirit of Christmas! This Hot Chocolate will keep you warm and cozy. Get comfortable and turn on your TV to watch holiday movies. It’s totally different this year, not all families come together to celebrate the holiday. I hope this hot drink can help brighten up your holiday spirit!

Let’s make hot chocolate

You can use dark chocolate morsels or semi-sweet chocolate chips. You can also use dark chocolate bar and break it into small pieces before melting. The cayenne pepper makes the chocolate flavor stand out. I love using brown sugar it gives the chocolate a bit of the molasses flavor.

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Spatula
  • Whisk
  • Drinking cup or glass

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder, dutch processed if possible
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate, chocolate morsels or chocolate bar broken into pieces
  • 1 1/2 cup whole milk or plant-based milk, + 1 tablespoon
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • a pinch of salt
  • a pinch of cayenne pepper (powdered), more if you want more heat

Instructions

  • Combine maple syrup and cocoa powder, mix until the cocoa powder completely dissolved. Add the brown sugar, mix until it dissolved. Set aside.
  • Melt dark chocolate morsels with 1 tablespoon of cream or milk. Either use a microwave or double boiler.
  • Pour melted chocolate into the cocoa powder and maple syrup mixture. Reserve a little bit of melted chocolate to drizzle on top of the hot chocolate.
  • In a saucepan, add milk, stir, simmer for a minute. Add the chocolate mixture into the milk, stir and simmer for another minute.
  • Pour the hot chocolate into a glass. Option, add marshmallows or whipped cream, drizzle the melted chocolate on top. Serve warm

Notes

  • For melting the chocolate: fill a saucepan halfway with water and place on the stove to simmer. Add the chocolate into a heatproof bowl. Place the bowl on top of the saucepan (make sure the bowl is bigger than the size of the saucepan, fit to sit on top). Stirring continuously until the chocolate completely melted.
