BBQ Pork Bun
Soft and not-so-sweet bread with sticky BBQ pork filling. This is a great snack or it can be a meal by itself. If you’re entertaining and thinking of something you can make ahead of time, this recipe is for you. The filling is very easy to make and deliciously satisfying. If you made these BBQ Pork Buns ahead of time, all you need to do is heat them in the oven for 3-5 minutes and you’re good to go!

- When the dough is ready, cut it in half first, then cut them into 18 pieces.
- You can either eyeball or use a weighing scale to measure the dough for even-size buns.
- Roll each dough into a small disk 4-5″ (10-13 cm) in diameter. Try to roll where the center is a bit thicker than the edges.
- Place a tablespoon of filling in the center.
- Gather the edges over the filling and pinch them together to seal the top. When ready to bake, place them sealed side down.
follow these steps before baking
- After filling the dough, lay them seal side down on a baking sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Cover with plastic wrap and lay over a kitchen towel. Let them sit for 30 minutes or until they double the size.
- Brush with egg wash.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds.
- Bake in a 375ºF oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.

BBQ Pork Bun

Ingredients
- 1 pound boneless pork ribs, sliced
- 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons Chinese Shaoxing wine
- 3 garlic cloves, finely minced
- salt and chili flakes
FOR THE BBQ SAUCE
- 3 tablespoons light soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili pepper flakes
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in 1/4 cup water or chicken broth
Instructions
- Prep the dough for the BBQ Pork Buns. The recipe is on my website. Search for HOMEMADE BREAD.
- In a bowl, combine boneless pork ribs, soy sauce, Chinese Shaoxing wine, garlic, salt, and chili flakes. Toss to coat. Marinate the meat for at least an hour or overnight in the fridge.
- Make the sauce. Dissolve the cornstarch in 1/4 cup water or chicken broth. In a saucepan, add soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, honey, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, and red chili pepper flakes, stir to combine. Add the cornstarch mixture, simmer, keep stirring until reduced and thickened. Set aside.
- Heat the oil in a skillet. Add the marinated pork, cook until browned. Remove from the pan, place them on a platter to cool.
- Cut the cooled pork into small chunks and place them in a bowl. Add the sauce, stir to mix.
- Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Line a baking sheet pan with parchment paper (you might need 2 baking sheet pans).
- Cut the bread dough in half first, then cut them into 18 pieces. Eyeball or weigh each dough to get the even-sized buns.
- Roll each dough into 4-5" (10-13 cm) in diameter. Fill them with about a tablespoon of the bbq pork filling. Pinch the edges to seal. Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with sesame seed, bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

- When the dough is ready or doubled the size, remove it from the bowl, lightly dust a surface, knead until the dough is smooth.
- Use a knife or bench scraper to cut the dough into 18 pieces.
- Form each dough into a small ball (in between the palm of your hands).
- Roll it into a disk, making the middle a bit thicker than the edges.
- A weighing scale is a helpful tool to keep them evenly sized.
